DAKARNAVE shipyard is a full service ship repair facility located in the Port of Dakar in Senegal, ideally situated on the West Coast of Africa to service all types of sea-going vessels using the North-South sea route.

DAKARNAVE is an affiliated company of LISNAVE INTERNATIONAL, SA, itself a member of the Portuguese group LISNAVE – ESTALEIROS Navais, one of the largest ship repair companies in the world and the leader in Europe.

Frederico José Ferreira de Mesquita Spranger, chairman of the Board of Directors, presents DAKARNAVE.

When the government of Senegal launched a call for tenders in the 1990s as part of the re-structuring of the shipping repair sector, Dakarnave was awarded the contract for operating the Dakar shipyards.

Created by Lisnave Internacional, an internationally renowned company, in 1999 Dakarnave signed a contract with the Senegalese government, represented by SIRN, for the exclusive running of the Dakar shipyards for an initial period of 25 years.

SIRN, in line with its business purpose, and as part of agreements written into the shipyard concession contract signed with Dakarnave, is responsible for the refurbishment of the Dakar shipyards. The operation was carried out with funding from the French Development Agency (AFD) granted in the form of a loan of €10.8 million for a period of 19 years, and repaid through a specific portion of the licence fee paid by Dakarnave.

In its first ten years in operation, Dakarnave experienced significant growth as a result of the strategy implemented to develop the markets related to the merchant navy and the fishing sector. Turnover increased over the period from 4 billion CFA Francs to approximately 12 billion CFA Francs. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Industrial fishing fleets, which constitute a stable core of recurring business, represented approximately 20% of total billing in 2010.
  • The proportion of turnover achieved with the merchant navy increased steadily to reach 62% in 2010.
  • The respective shares in turnover from orders from the naval forces of Senegal and France represented 4% in 2010.
  • The offshore activities of oil companies is an intermittent source of business, but one which may represent up to 25% of turnover, as was the case in 2007. In 2010 this category represented 13% of the total biling.
  • Since operations began, foreign customers have accounted for more than 92% of turnover, generating approximately €113 million in foreign currency.

This success was made possible by the inestimable and indispensable assistance of Dakarnave's main shareholder Lisnave Internacional, both in terms of skills sharing and in the commercial support that constitutes the Lisnave "brand".

The volume of investments and major infrastructure repairs carried out required considerable operational and financial resources. After the rehabilitation phase, up till 2010, Dakarnave invested approximately 5 billion CFA Francs in infrastructure and government-owned zones.

Against this background, Dakarnave has blended entrepreneurship with rigorous management in prioritising investments indispensable to the production process, that is to say infrastructure, machinery and occupational training.

Dakarnave employs 282 permanent workers, 274 of whom are from Senegal and 8 are expatriates. When working to full potential and with the addition of sub-contractors and day labourers, the total headcount of the shipyard can reach more than 600.

The added value of the labour employed by Dakarnave, including permanent workers, day labourers and sub-contractors, represents almost 30% of the company's turnover.
